-Albert Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former .On Saturday September 13, I witnessed an act of stupidity that should not be tolerated in the game of hockey.
One of my teammates was the victim of a check from behind, thus dislocating his shoulder and giving him a concussion. At the rink we were playing at, Brooks School, the staff decided to join in on the “Heads Up Line” movement. This is a bright orange line going around the rink and when a player has his head down going towards the boards he is supposed to know to look up when he sees the line. This doesn’t work, a big strip of paint won’t make countless injuries stop! It’s the same as having those drinking and driving commercials, people see them, but they still drink and drive.
What needs to be changed is the way that we teach players how to check and how to receive a check, that doesn’t mean just tell them “If you see their numbers, don’t hit them.” Which simply means “don’t hit them from behind.” Coaches need to show their players that you don’t turn right before somebody hits you and you don’t put you head down! Also all leagues should increase the amount of penalty time to ten minutes instead of the eight that there is right now. If these changes are made the amount of hits from behind resulting in injuries and the amount of wasted paint should stop.
